First Aid Kit Checklist

The other day, my nine year old son had a tumble off our porch, only two steps down. However, this seemingly small fall created panic because as I was bringing him into the house he said he could not see me. I was not prepared for a concussion, I know how to apply a band-aid and kiss it better but a head injury I was lost and did not have the time to research it on the internet.

I quickly put my two sons in the car and drove to our family doctor. He was able to see us and inform me of what to do and expect in this situation. Luckily we did not have to go the emergency room but he had to be watched for the next 12 hours because of the blow to the back of his head.

After leaving the doctor I felt stupid because I did not know the protocol for a head injury. I understand I cannot know everything but as a teacher and parent it is best to know the basics in first aid. Next time a student or one of my sons has a fall I will know what to do.
