February 2008:Black History Month

February, Black History Month is a time to introduce students to African-Americans who are a part of our history. African-Americans have impacted our lives and February is an opportunity to hear the names of forgotten and well-known African-Americans.

Otis Boykin, an African-American saves hundreds, if not thousands of lives each year with the invention of the pacemaker. Meanwhile, Garrett Morgan, saves lives with the invention of the traffic signal. Could you imagine the chaos in urban centers without this invention? African-Americans have made contributions in all areas of our lives and it is important for students to hear about their contribution to our lives.

Black HISTORY, Of all the Afcrians shipped accross the ocean only 5% landed on the shores of the U.S. The rest went to South Amercia. Along with the landings of ships there were Blacks, Germans. Irish, Ect, To pay for their passage they agreed to be an (indentured servant) So get here and pay later. Anthony Johnson "Antonio a Negro" was one of the orgnial 20 Afcrians brought to Jamestown virgina. He worked off his debt for passage and paid for his wife and son in 1651. He made enough money to to buy 5 servants and that gave him "Headrights" which he was granted 250 acers for. In 1654 Johnson convinced the North Hampton court the he was entiled to a lifetime service of Afcrian John Casor, claiming that he had been imported as an indentured servant. Casor attempted to argue that his remaiming time be of service to Robert Parker,a white slave holder. Johnson insisted that he "had ye negro for his life" The court ruled that John Casor forthwith returne unto the service of said master Anthony Johnson for life. John Casor became the first individual in Virgina know to be legally declared a slave by the goverment. In 1860 there 27 million whites in the u.s. only 385,00 had slaves. Few whites had more than one or five slaves. At the time 4.5 million Negros lived in the U.S.in 1860 3,000 free Afrcians owned 20,000 slaves. An Afrcian Ellsion paid his money to be relaesed from being an indentured servant then Started his own plantation. He had up to 100 slaves to work and also breed them to sell. Even though it was ilegal to do so for all slave owners and was frowned upon even by the whites, he became the largets salve owner in sumter district. He was noted for being very harsh to his slaves and underfeeding them. He was a slave himslef for many years before owning slaves. His wealth outdistanced 90% of his white neighbors in Sumter District. His wealth was 15 times greater than that of the states average for whites.Ellison owned more slaves than 99% of the South's Slaveholders. A very wealty Afrcian.
