To recap, Scott Baio is now 45 and facing a mid-life crisis of sorts. He has to decide whether he wants to get married, or remain a bachelor (and alone) for the rest of his life. He has a girl he says he loves, and to get in the mind frame needed to provide a commitment to her he has hired a life coach for eight weeks.
The great part for viewers is that Baio’s life coach has decided that the first thing he needs to do is go back to all his old girlfriends (which list as a who’s who of Hollywood’s 80s and 90s babes) and figure out what went wrong.
Now, honestly, can any of you imagine having to do this? I think this is something we’ve all done in our minds when faced at a romantic crossroads, but to actually call up people from our past to discuss our shortcomings? That's rough. Then again Baio is self-admittedly one of the most extreme players around so maybe this drastic step really is required.
Baio introduces us into his world by showing us the guys he hangs with. (And there’s one in that crowd that will undoubtedly have a problem with Baio’s desire for settling down.) What else is odd is seeing all these “cameos” – like the kid who played the big brother on the Wonder Years and happens to be one of Baio’s chums or Clint Howard who shares the same agent.
Side note here: loved seeing Clint Howard. Loved it! How can you not? (But who is this pal of Baio’s that doesn’t know that Ron Howard is Clint’s brother? DUH.) Incidentally, Baio’s agent is Harry Gold – who I’m sure I’ve seen on some kind of “E True Hollywood Story" involving his daughter Tracy or something. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I also loved that Baio admitted he hated doing the Happy Days reunion last year. I knew it! I watched that show with my husband and we both couldn’t believe how uncomfortable he looked during the entire thing! Like he was forced to do it or something.
Anyways – back to tracking Baio’s old girlfriends. He starts with Susie – the first girl he had real feelings for. She’s a married mom now and seems quite happy and content without Baio in her life. But the real fun comes when we learn that Erin Moran was Baio’s “first,” and when he meets up with her she tells him the reason they split was because he said he wanted to marry her (?) and that he also promised her “he would grow.” Yes – there. (Remember these kids were only in their early teens at the time.) To his credit, Baio seems amused by this wackiness, and even has a laugh about his teeny weeny while enjoying cigars at the races with his buds. I’d say with the number of women he’s supposedly dated, his promise to Moran must be come true.
As if this isn’t enough for one episode, he calls up Henry Winkler for advice (yes, the Fonz!) and promises he’ll invite him to his wedding. (That’s if he can figure out if the girl in question is The One.)
Whew. I’m exhausted. But very satisfied. Thanks, Scott. Can’t wait for next week.
