Katie Couric the Cougar

Katie Couric gave the commencement address at Princeton on Monday, and joked about her "cougar" status. A cougar, of course, is any older woman who dates a younger man. Couric's boyfriend is 33. (She's 52.)

There was a show a few years ago that helped popularize the term "cougar." It was Age of Love. Remember? I loved that show! It prompted me to write the article, "Does Age Really Matter in Dating?"

I think that age can make a huge difference in a relationship in many situations. However, if both the woman and man know who they are and what they want out of the relationship, it can work. But it takes a special couple of people in order to make it work.

What do you think? Does age matter when it comes to the dating world?

I am a never married baby boomer, who prefers women in the 30-45 range. I will go older, or younger, but that 15-year spread is my ideal. I never like to reveal my age too soon, as I look younger than I actually am. I worry that the girl may become alienated, if she finds out how old I am too soon.
It's a shame that some people, guys as well as girls, may be turned off by someone's age, even if they find her/him attractive. I have no problem with "cougars" dating younger guys; Katie Couric is someone who I would like to meet, and she is easily attractive to younger guys!
Also, parents shouldn't be too "uptight", when they learn that their daughter/son is going out with someone out of their immediate age range. As long as the older, say man, is not married, he can't be compared to a Bill Clinton, or Gary Condit. The parents should realize that their daughter/son is an adult. The rules which rightfully applied at 16 have no bearing when she/he is, say 24!
Let's hope society as a whole continues to be more tolerant, regarding older man/younger woman relationships, as well as the reverse.
