Final Episode of The Sopranos

With The Sopranos coming to an end this Sunday I couldn’t help writing about them in this blog.

What do The Sopranos have to do with dating, you ask? I’m getting to that.

First, let me just say that I had never seen the show until this year. Up until then my husband kept telling me that we had to watch this groundbreaking television series. But we didn’t have HBO, and I didn’t want to shell out money for the DVDs.

So I said, “forgettaboutit!”

But he persisted – swearing that I would love the show. I didn’t believe him. Me? Like a mobster show? Na-uh. Then, when A&E started showing reruns of The Sopranos he began taping them for us to watch.

I found myself looking forward to the show week after week. My husband and I had tons of discussions about plot lines and psychology. We talked about Tony’s dreams and his relationship with Carmella. We talked about decorating styles (between the “old school” gang and the younger set), and even how Meadow and AJ were being raised. Suddenly, I couldn’t get enough. I couldn’t wait for it to air weekly. I had to catch up, had to know what was happening now!

We began renting episodes back to back. Each night after work we’d snuggle in on the couch and watch hour after hour of Sopranos television. We watched so much that (in typical Sopranos form) my dreams became affected. Even when the show’s characters didn’t show up in my REM cycle, the way they talked, their mannerisms, and the “activities” they took part in did.

One night, my Sopranos obsession combined with my love of cleaning, and I dreamt that Tony Soprano was cleaning his toilet with bourbon. I watched from the bathroom doorway, and he smiled at me as he poured the liquid into the toilet bowl. He had one of those glass decanters that people used to keep their booze in, and he said, “It’s bourbon. Good for stains. If ya know what I mean.” He winked at me and I thanked him for the tip.

When I told my husband this the next morning he suggested maybe we were watching a little too much Sopranos at once! But of course, we kept going.

So what will happen on the final episode of the Sopranos? Join the discussion and weigh in on your predictions.

In the meantime, I think you’ll agree that what makes The Sopranos so fascinating is that it’s not about mobster life so much as it’s about people trying to get along in their relationships. It got me to thinking, what can a bunch of fictional mobsters teach us about dating and relationships? Here are a few (tongue in cheek) points.
