Presidential Pets

Throughout history Presidents of the USA have owned an array of different pets. The White House has been home to dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, fish, rabbits, horses, and many other animal species.

Most of the Presidents appear to have been animal lovers. Many Presidents had multiple pets while living at the White House and some have been lucky enough to have been born in the White House, and later move back in. In 1989 President George H.W. Bush's dog “Millie” had a litter of puppies in the White House. Her puppy, “Spot”, went to the current President Bush. “Spot” returned to the White House with the current President and lived out the remainder of his years.
