Sometimes dogs eat their own stool, sometimes another animals - cat litter boxes are a common treat for some dogs. This problem may lead to an intestinal parasite infection.
Why do dogs eat stools?
Dogs may eat stools because it smells good to them, cats have a lot of protein in their diet that may make the stool appealing to dogs. Some believe dogs eat poop due to a dietary deficiency.
Solutions:
A solution to the problem is difficult if the dog is outside all the time because you are not able to watch the animal. One solution is to try applying hot sauce to all the stools in the yard. If the dog is eating it's own stools, or another dogs in the household, you can get a product called For-bid from your veterinarian. This product gets mixed with the food and is supposed to make the stools taste bad to the the dogs. If your dogs like to get in the cat litter box the best thing you can do is keep the box scooped and in a location your dog can't reach. I had a litter box under a small table, in a corner with a poster board around the other two sides, there was only room for the cat to enter and exit. If your dog likes cat poop you have to out smart it, so get creative and good luck.
