Dogs and cats have anal glands on both sides of their rectum - at 8 and 4 O' Clock. These anal glands should empty naturally when the animal has a bowel movement but in some not-so-lucky beasts these glands do not empty and cause discomfort.
How do you know if your dog or cat is having anal gland issues? Generally they will scoot across the floor on their bottom, some animals lick or chase their tail. If your pet is displaying any of these behaviors you should see your veterinarian and have the glands checked.
A veterinarian or veterinary technician can empty the glands for you and teach you how to do it at home. If the glands remain full they could abscess and/or rupture - treatable but messy. In severe cases, where the pet needs to have the glands emptied on a regular basis, surgical removal of the glands maybe recommended.
