Collapsing trachea

Collapsing trachea is usually seen in small breed dogs, Yorkies seem to be a common breed with the defect.

The walls of the trachea are made up of rings of cartilage called tracheal rings, dogs with a collapsing trachea have rings that collapse during respiration. When this happens they cough, sounds something like a goose honk, very dry and harsh.

The cough is worse during excitement, exercise, and leash pulling. Once your dog is diagnosed it will require management on your part so that your pet is kept comfortable. Your veterinarian may prescribe steroids and/or medications to slow breathing.

Things you can do at home to help your pet would include aggressive weight loss, use of harness instead of collar, keeping them away from cigarette smoke, and give any medications as prescribed.
