Regina Spektor

I began listening to Regina Spektor this week upon the week-old recommendation of a friend. And I have to say that I am more than pleasantly surprised by Regina’s most resent album, Begin to Hope.

This Russian born, New York raised classically influenced operatic styled crooner really impresses me. I have to say that part of why I continue to listen to Begin to Hope has largely to do with shear curiosity. When you listen to Regina you really don’t know what to expect. In the beginning you might think all you’re going to hear is piano and a woman singing - not unlike Norah Jones. You might also think you’re listening to Fiona Apple’s twin, but this is also far from the case. While both these artists are comparable to Ms. Spektor, she definitely brings an entirely different talent and composure to the table in a way that is vocally and musically unique. Another fascinating element to Regina’s music is that she has the ability to somehow evoke different musical eras without sounding dated.

So, if you feel like being entertained and hearing something truly versatile, then pick up Regina Spektor’s new album. I highly recommend it!
