I love The Shins because they deliver song-by-song, cohesive albums. They also seem to be one of those reberché bands who hit the mark every time. Their first and second albums were awesome; and now their third is just as luscious. I mention this because I can’t count the number of times I’ve liked the first and second albums from a band, and then they release a third album that sincerely disappoints. Therefore, The Shins have passed my litmus test and produced a truly stellar third album in Wincing the Night Away.
The album opens with “Sleeping Lessons” and the first thing that came to my mind was the movie, Science of Sleep. Wincing the Night Away provokes an interesting comparison to this film. Here’s why: Science of Sleep is one of those strangely enchanting films that captivates the viewer with its offbeat style, atypical story, and unique technique. It’s okay that the film doesn’t make sense all the time because you can’t help but be in wonder of the story that’s unfolding in front of you. When Science of Sleep is over you feel somehow fulfilled and know that your time was well spent. This is exactly what it means to listen to this Shins album. Wincing the Night Away is like my new Golden Pony.
