I love The Shins because they deliver song-by-song, cohesive albums. They also seem to be one of those reberché bands who hit the mark every time. Their first and second albums were awesome; and now their third is just as luscious. I mention this because I can’t count the number of times I’ve liked the first and second albums from a band, and then they release a third album that sincerely disappoints. Therefore, The Shins have passed my litmus test and produced a truly stellar third album in Wincing the Night Away.

The album opens with “Sleeping Lessons” and the first thing that came to my mind was the movie, Science of Sleep. Wincing the Night Away provokes an interesting comparison to this film. Here’s why: Science of Sleep is one of those strangely enchanting films that captivates the viewer with its offbeat style, atypical story, and unique technique. It’s okay that the film doesn’t make sense all the time because you can’t help but be in wonder of the story that’s unfolding in front of you. When Science of Sleep is over you feel somehow fulfilled and know that your time was well spent. This is exactly what it means to listen to this Shins album. Wincing the Night Away is like my new Golden Pony.

This is my attempt to have some foresite into the New Year regarding the indie music section and start the year off right!

So, here are some things that I would like to bring into the section this year.

-More indie band/artists reviews

-More album/c.d. reviews

-More concert reviews

-More artist/band interviews

-And anything new or exciting that I can possible think of to keep you all entertained or at least mildly interested.

It may now appear that 2007 is going to look a lot like 2006. Au contraire! I will try my best to keep things exciting and strive to add a new flare to the indie music section.

As always I would love to here from you all. Feel free to email me any bands/artists - or anything related to indie music - that you would like me to check out.

Hope your New Year rocks!

Aviette recently sent me a copy of their first full length album, “Until We Hear From Dave”, and I must first thank Holly for sending me such awesome music. “Until We Hear From Dave” brings together remnants of early 90s grunge when it was still underground minus teenage anger combined with a clean, crisp rock and roll sound all their own. This is just my attempt to depict the Aviette sound and by no means defines the band entirely. However, the way they successfully create a unique sound conveys to the listener that the band loves what they do and they work hard to do it well. When the album is over, I want to listen to it again. And I do.

Additionally, I know this may seem random but it’s relavant. A few weeks ago I went to a Jet concert and am still amazed at how awesome that show was. If Jet stays together I think they’ll make an impact comparable to the Rolling Stones. The same kind of honest and precise delivery I noticed at that show is present in Aviette. With their sound and presentation I have no doubt that Aviette will also leave a strong musical mark.

“The Beauty of Letting Go” is one of those albums that take time to ease into, but the more I listen to this it the more I like it, which is a rare occurrence for me. And I have to admit that what initially kept me listening to this album was due more to the band’s story than their actual music. Don’t get me wrong, I do love Green RIver Ordinance’s music. It’s solid and consistent rock. I guess what I’m trying to say is that although their sound is good and hearty, it’s not the typical album I’d have set to repeat. What’s interesting is that given time, GRO’s lyrics, melodies, and overall musical presentation successfully drew me into really digging their music. From the cello-induced acoustic track to the radio-ready pop rock hits, “The Beauty of Letting Go” covers all the musical bases within their genre - and does so very well.

Regardless of whether you like GRO, serious credit must be given to these 5 guys from Fort Worth, Texas who have been living their music dream since 2003. The musical talent emitting from this album is purely amazing and it is worth at least a couple thorough listens.

That's right, there is a such thing as Fender made for your feet...

Now, I am a big fan of anything Fender. Fender guitars are a good starter and it only gets better from there. I absolutely love my Fender bass, Fender sweater and Fender T-shirt. And now I've discovered that there are Fender shoes! How awesome is that?

I am tempted to order a pair of these shoes even though it seems they are only technically made for men. Anyway, check out the "Downbeat Canvas", it's my favorite!
