Was Hitler a Christian?

Associating Christianity with one of the most evil monsters in human history is, of course, something that critics of Christianity would love to accomplish. Not surprisingly, many have made the claim that Adolf Hitler was a Christian. Is there truth to the claim?

A website dedicated to religious liberty, critical thought and the late Stephen Jay Gould provides a list of quotes that indeed link Hitler with Christianity.

It is unfortunately true that Martin Luther, the great Reformer, was anti-semitic in his writings. And Luther probably and most tragically influenced Hitler's anti-semitism.

And it is also true that Adolf Hitler enjoyed the support of many professed Christian leaders in Germany during his rise to power. Yet...Hitler was ambitious, lusting for power. He used every resource and interest group he could to achieve power, and this included churches.

The key to answering the question of whether Hitler was a Christian is to first ask: What is a Christian?

Based on a biblical definition of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ, no one can rationally associate Adolf Hitler with the term "Christian." And no one should try.
