He preached Jesus is the only way to heaven at funerals and voluntary chapel services. He prayed in Jesus' name at public events. And now Navy Chaplain Gordon Klingenschmitt has been ordered out of the service, effective January 31.
The controversy began apparently in 2004 when Klingenschmitt preached a controversial, but very traditional, evangelical message at a funeral. He was called on the carpet by his commanding officer, and it was down hill from there.
Klingenschmitt and his supporters (including a majority of the previous Congress) believe that a chaplain has the right to preach and practice according to his or her religious views. His detractors disagree, arguing that chaplains serve an audience broader than any particular sectarian segment and that their actions and expressions of worship should reflect that diversity.
