Merry Christmas, Barbara Walters

President and Mrs. Bush sent out their annual Christmas cards (paid for by the Republican National Committee) and Barbara Walters was on the list. The famous journalist and View panelist received the card, which contained an Old Testament scripture reference:

“You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.”

...and a clear "Merry Christmas" greeting.

Not appropriate, says Ms. Walters. According to an article with The Christian Post, Ms. Walters asked if such card also went to "agnostics, and atheists, and Muslims." She then expressed disapproval with the idea that the "president of all the people" would send such a "religious Christmas card."

Let's see. George Washington was "president of all the people." In fact, he was our first President. Since Christmas wasn't culturally as popular then, we can't comment on that. But Washington did say a lot about Thanksgiving, and he had no qualms with couching that holiday in clear religious language.

In fact, President Washington declared it was the "duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour."

I wonder what Ms. Walters would think about that?
