The purpose behind people using the "Happy Holidays" greeting is apparently to soothe feelings, avoid offense, etc. But is it working? More Americans are offended at "Happy Holidays" than they are at hearing "Merry Christmas." Yet many stores and offices persist in the generic - and now we can say "offensive" - greeting.
