We live in a celebrity-obsessed culture. Britney Spears is one of the most popular celebrities of 2006 - and in recent years...period. Why?
It's not because she's a role model for peace and stability. She has switched religions at least three times: Baptist to Kabbalah to, it appears, Hinduism. She hasn't had much luck with relationships either. Certainly, I'm not bashing Ms. Spears. There are millions of people out there who struggle with their faith and their family life. What puzzles me is why we are so obsessed with her.
Britney Spears is a human being. Britney Spears is a talented and accomplished entertainer - well, some might argue with the "talented" part, but she is certainly accomplished. And Britney Spears is wealthy. But...why does this qualify Britney Spears to receive the adulation that she gets from so many people? Why are we obsessed with Britney Spears and celebrities like her?
Surely, there are others who have done far more to better our society than Britney Spears. Why aren't we talking about them?
