The Christmas 2007 blockbuster movie is shaping up to be The Golden Compass, complete with talking animals, fantastic battle scenes, and Nicole Kidman. It may look like C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia, but this is only because the author of The Golden Compass hates everything C.S. Lewis stood for. Something, the British atheist made clear in past interviews.
Of course, Philip Pullman has recently distanced himself from the accusations that his books are intended to support atheism. He claims only that his targets are those who "use religion" to establish repressive rule over others. Fair enough - if only that were true.
A close look at Pullman's past interviews and the very text of his own books prove that Pullman has a much bigger target in mind -- Christianity itself. This will become most evident in the sequels.
But Christians can't be too surprised. If we can get blockbusters like The Passion of the Christ and The Chronicles of Narnia on the Big Screen, then we should expect the atheists will respond.
Still, we as Christians shouldn't be idle. We need to tell the world what The Golden Compass is really all about. And that is another cultural broadside against all things Christian and a salute to moral relativism.
So, parents, be warned.
