Knitting and Crochet Online Group

My first week at Suite 101 has been a blast! I’ve met lots of new people, learned a lot, and wrote my little arm off. I’ve also thought a whole bunch about our Knitting & Crochet Online Group.

I’d like to start an online knit/crochet group on Suite 101. It will be a place where we can chat, show pictures, ask questions, lend support to one another, share patterns, trade yarn/notions, hold an online show complete with voting, and maybe even do a little group charity work. Since this is just getting off the ground here at Suite 101, it will take a while to build membership, so any word of mouth you can get around about the new group is greatly appreciated.

I’m also in the process of building a website to complement the knitting/crochet section here at Suite 101. This site will have videos that pertain to the articles posted at Suite101.com. Readers will be able to go to the website for videos demonstrating techniques. It will also include news, podcasts, and names of sponsors who will give all members ongoing discounts at their online shops!

I received a few responses to my request for ideas for the group’s name. Thanks—they were great. They were: The Suitehearts, ArachnaKnits, Arachna’s Suite, Penelope’s Web, Penelopiad KC Group, Penelope’s Guild, Penelope’s Loom, Suite Penelope and Penelope’s Suite. Clarifications and backgrounds of what these names mean can be found at a discussion on Suite 101. It explains in detail who Penelope is and why her name would be appropriate. As for the “arachna” based names, those are all based on the greek prefix “arachna,” meaning spider related.

Please send me your thoughts by email or through discussion. Thanks, and I’ll see you online!

Renée

I am a beginner (49 yr old mom) crochet person, doing pattern BERNAT SOFTEE, fits up to 9 mos, hooded baby bunting bag (patter found on internet)with zipper front closure (skill level EASY) I have completed the BACK (18") and have FASTENED OFF. Now I am having trouble with SHAPE SLEEVES. Pattern reads:

Shape Sleeves: With MC (main color), ch 24. With WS of work facing, join ch to back and work 3rd row of pat across back sts. Ch 25. Turn

Next Row: 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. *Miss next 3 ch 9 dc in next ch. Miss next 3 ch. 1sc in next st. **Miss 3 ch. 9 dc in top of 9dcl. Miss 3 ch. 1 sc in next sc. Rep from ** 9 times more. *** Miss next 3 ch. 9 dc in next ch. Miss next 3 ch. 1 sc in next ch. Rep from *** to end of ch. Join A (alternate color) Ch 3. Turn Taking sleeves into pat, work a further 13 rows pat, thus ending on a first row of pat. Fasten Off.

I have ch 24 on my hook but how do I JOIN TO BACK? Am I working across the same BACK rows as I was doing when crocheting the BACK? What does it mean TAKING SLEEVES INTO PAT? Can anyone help me, or is this to complicated for a beginner? Should I find a different BEGINNER, SUPER EASY PATTERN for bunting bag for my expected grandchild? Thanks, from CarolN My email address is freedom59@msn.com

what does it mean when it says to [ch 1, skip next ch, dc in each of next 3 chs] across, turn (12 groups of 3 dc)? I am trying to make my new to be granddaughter a sweater. I already made a bonnet and booties but now I want to crochet her a sweater as well and I am stuck here. Can you please help me.
Thank you,

I am a beginner crocheter too, teaching myself thru a book. The lessons were easy enough to understand as far as learning the different stitches and such. However, there was no lesson on how to read a pattern! i understand the abbreviations, but the rest i don't get. i am trying to make a scarf which reads:

in mat stitch, 25 sts (4 shells + 1 sc) and 8 rows =4". shells= [(dc, ch 1)twice, dc)] (don't see how thats 25 stitches, by my count its only 21?)

instructions. ch 26 (ok, straightforward enough)rs( which side is the right side? from what i understand it doesn't necessarily mean the right-HAND side) Beg in second ch from hook, sc in second ch, *skip 2 ch, in next ch work shell, skip 2 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * across, end be working sc in las chain.- 25 stitches counting ch-1 spaces; 4 shells.

I think i understand but i want to make sure i'm doing this right.could some one translate this to english for me?! thanks
