Scuba Divemaster

As a club scuba divemaster, I had the enjoyable task of escorting a group of divers to Lady Elliot Island. The diving here is mainly from the shore.

On this particular trip the weather wasn’t the best with a strong wind blowing. This pushed up waves over the reef flat making the entry a bit of a challenge. One of the divers had trouble with the waves, the uneven reef flat and that large amount of scuba gear that all divers carry. I’m not sure exactly what happened, but somehow a wave pulled one of his fins from his grip.

So in order for him to have an enjoyable dive, I gave him my fins and I did the dive with just one fin. It was an interesting underwater technique, having propulsion from one leg and the other used for pushing off the sandy floor or dead coral.

This wasn’t too bad, though I was concerned if I had to do a rescue or assist another diver that required the full power of two fins. It was a risk I took, and fortunately nothing else happen and we completed the dive successfully.

The diver enjoyed his dive and we never found the lost fin.
