World AIDS Day

Today, being World AIDS Day, is a great opportunity to show your committment to fighting the spread of AIDS by taking part in events, wearing a red ribbon, talking to people about this growing pandemic, and educating yourself on AIDS. Communities around the world have planned events to help educate and raise awareness.

World AIDS Day was originally created and organized by UNAIDS. However, in 2005, they handed over the reins to a non-profit organization called, The World AIDS Campaign. This year the theme for World AIDS Day is "Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise-Accountability."

In Vancouver, there will be a fundraiser tonight at the Croatian Cultural Centre featuring a number of bands including The Sessions, Bend Sinister and The February's with hip hop from mc's Brigee K and Kia Kadiri. At the University of British Columbia, UBC CUAEM and Global Outreach Students Association members have been involved in planning talks and organizing a petition to have the Jean Chretien Pledge to Africa amended so that Canada will contribute to the slow of AIDS in Africa by providing much needed pharmaceuticals to Africa.

Although the fight against AIDS should not be the focus for only one day a year, today is still a great opportunity to educate yourself and raise awareness in your community
