Empowering Women in Brooklyn

Housing Works is planning to build a clinical centre in Brooklyn that caters to women with HIV/AIDS. The centre will provide primary care and dental services and is set to open in the spring of next year.

Increasingly, minority women are being diagnosed with HIV in New York. Of all the women who tested positive for HIV in the New York area, the overwhelming majority were black. Women of color are already at a disadvantage when it comes to accessing resources, but when HIV is thrown into the mix, the challenges become exponentially harder to overcome.

By providing basic medical services, the hope is that the lifespan of these women can be increased which will lead to a longer time that they are able to work and raise their children.
