Welcome to Microbiology

I am your new host for Microbiology, and am excited to have the opportunity to share information with you on the role and affect of microorganisms in our lives.

In the past week alone, my local newspaper has reported on HIV-AIDS, duck hunters catching bird flu, confirmation of a second bird flu death in Thailand, a 'superbug' found at a hospital in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, virus vaccination of school-age children, reports of Legionella infection in the largest healthcare complex east of Montreal, deadly parvovirus infection in dogs in Nova Scotia, and an outbreak of anthrax that has killed hundreds of farm animals in Saskatchewan. As your microbiology host it looks like I have my work cut out for the next number of weeks.

Watch for an article this week on anthrax, followed by articles on the hazards of parvovirus, debunking superbugs, infections acquired in healthcare settings, and subsequent articles on Legionella, bird flu, viruses and vaccines.

Please email me or visit the discussion forum to ask questions, share comments and insights, and make requests for topics that you would like to see covered.
