Pelvic inflammatory disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition that can lead to infertility, ectopic pregnancy and may even be fatal. Pelvic inflammatory disease results when organisms ascend from the lower genital tract (vagina and cervix) and cause infection in the upper genital tract (uterus [endometritis], fallopian tubes [salpingitis], pelvic peritoneal cavity [pelvic peritonitis]).

Herbal remedies that promise to cure pelvic inflammatory disease are misleading and dangerous. There is no scientific evidence to suggest that herbal remedies are an effective treatment for PID. Of the numerous advertisements that market herbal remedies for treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease, none provide references to clinical trials that prove product claims.

Pelvic inflammatory disease most often results from untreated sexually transmitted infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (chlamydia) or Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhea). Both of these bacteria are effectively treated with antibiotics. If you have symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection or pelvic inflammatory disease, see your doctor and get appropriate treatment.

Do your research. Do not be sucked in by deceptive advertising!
