H5N1 Avian Influenza

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) have released a 3-day online course for state and local public health officials on response to human cases of H5N1 avian influenza.

The course, available of the CSTE website, is titled CDC/CSTE Rapid Response Training: The Role of Public Health in a Multi-Agency Response to Avian Influenza in the U.S.

The course consists of six modules:

• Surveillance
• Case management
• Personal protective equipment
• Poultry farm investigation
• Management and public health action
• Laboratory issues

The course was developed by the CDC and CSTE with educators at the North Carolina Center for Public Health Preparedness. The course is free and is designed to meet the needs of a variety of public health professionals.

Although 12 countries have reported human H5N1 cases, no human or avian cases have been reported in North America.
