Clean water concerns

The Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia may not begin treatment of its water supply for legionella until the end of June. A pilot treatment to treat water for legionella was initially scheduled to begin last November, but there has been a delay while the facility awaits receipt of pumps required for reducing legionella concentrations in its aging pipes and plumbing.
Legionella infection was blamed for for at least two serious infections in immunocompromised patients at the hospital, one of which resulted in the death of a young woman with leukemia in 2005. The infections occurred despite hospital policy requiring high-risk patients to use bottled water rather than water from faucets.
