Although American beers are in some ways the Rodney Dangerfields of the beer world, American brewers still acquitted themselves well. Boston Beer's Samuel Adams took a total of 8 medals, 3 of them gold. Deschutes also took 3 golds, with 4 medals overall.
The Beer Star Awards were initiated by the Association of Private Breweries in Germany, and the Association of Small and Independent Breweries in Europe. Awards were given in 40 different beer categories, and each category receives a gold, silver, and bronze medal. This year's competition had a total of 575 beers from 28 nations, an increase of 30% over last year.
The tasting jury was made up of 54 members from around the world. They have the enviable task of judging the multitude of beers strictly on the basis of sensory criteria and enjoyment. Take a look at the winner's list - it also makes a great list of "beers to try."
If they need judges for next year, I'd be glad to volunteer!
