It's been a few years since I read a remarkable profile of Brad Pitt in Vanity Fair but the opening line (as best as I remember) is still provocative. "When you first meet Brad Pitt, you think, 'Oh dear, Brad Pitt is a knucklehead.'"
Knucklehead or not, I prayed that one day I'd have the opportunity to interview Brad Pitt and superstars in general. I wanted to suss Mr. Pitt out for myself. Unfortunately, he hasn't called me yet for that tete-a-tete at the Chateau Marmont...but one day... one day...
Of course Mr. Pitt's star shine has diminished a bit recently, what with his marriage falling apart and dashing around the world after Angelina Jolie. So, OK, I began as a fawning fan but now I'm more of an observer.
I've a lot in common with many North Americans who flip through tabloids at the grocery store. We judge stars. We care about their lives. Why?
Celebrities are like high-performance athletes. They do things the common man or woman will never do, have access to places we won't and see the world in a different light. It's an extraordinarily privileged world - Michael J. Fox described it beautifully as the "World of Yes".
I want to explore that Yes World without getting to the point where I find myself in Hollywood Hills digging through recycling boxes and breathlessly reporting back on what kind of soy milk celebs buy or issuing a breaking news story that says, "They pump their own gas!"
I hope to explore the talent, passion and curiosity in Hollywood and Hollywood North and, along the way, write about everything from fashion to makeup to behaviour to celebrity trends.
In the last two years, I've lunched with Sandra Oh at a trendy café in Los Feliz in north L.A. (before her career exploded and she won a Golden Globe for Grey's Anatomy and exclaimed that she felt like her body was on fire), chatted with Martin Sheen as he was about to leave The West Wing, Charlie Sheen the day his separation was announced , Victor Garber from Alias (a charming Canadian), the entire cast of The O.C. (Benjamin Mckenzie is uber-cute in person), John Ritter (a year before his death, so gracious and interesting), and Matt LeBlanc (exhausted from carrying Joey), plus numerous talented producers and directors.
So, Brad, call me anytime!
