How to Finish an Oil Pastel Painting
I recently recieved this email from a reader:
Dear Alina,
I have seen your art which is spectacular. I have just started using the oil pastels as I have always used oil paints, but feel that the pastels would be easier when I travel.
My question is how do you protect your painting when you are finished?
All the books I have looked through only tell me different techniques, but no one has said whether I have to let them set for a few days or do I lightly spray them with a
non gloss spray?
Can you please help me...
Thank you so much,
Crystal G.
My simple answer? Do nothing.
Oil pastels are a wonderful medium. They need little to no extras once you're done with the actual painting process. For most of my oil pastel paintings I simply frame them to protect the pastel from damage. The best way to frame oil pastels paintings is under glass with a mat and spacers.
Even if you don't frame right away, after a few days the painting will get a thick skin that will protect it from light touching.
Hope that helps you Crystal and all of my other pastel painters out there!
