I just received this email and thought it is important to share it with my readers:

Hi All.

The Save L’Aquila Project presents a uniquely educational week of art, design and architecture events, October 3-10 in Santa Monica, to benefit the victims of a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that occurred on April 6, 2009, in Italy’s L’Aquila region. Beginning with a photography exhibit at Jeanie Madsen Gallery and featuring talks with some of today’s foremost practitioners (scientists, designers, architects) in earthquake preparedness, the Save L’Aquila Project is intended to help the victims of the April quake…but it’s us – the Angelenos who should emerge from the week’s events a bit more earthquake-prepared – who are the real beneficiaries of this exciting project. The events take place one week in advance of October 15’s Great Shake Out).

Strathmore Papers is having an illustration contest I have to enter. To win, all you have to do is create an illustration of what you think "green" (as in recycle, reduce and reuse) is in a visual sense. The artwork has to be on Strathmore paper and it has to be done with dry media. There will be four winners, two student artists and two professional / hobbyist artists. The winning art will be featured on one of 4 Strathmore Premium Recycled pads and the winning artists also receive a carton of free art paper.

Students who enter will also win $1,000 for their school's art department.

For more information see the official contest rules.

How do you see green?

I recently recieved this email from a reader:

Dear Alina,

I have seen your art which is spectacular. I have just started using the oil pastels as I have always used oil paints, but feel that the pastels would be easier when I travel.

My question is how do you protect your painting when you are finished?

All the books I have looked through only tell me different techniques, but no one has said whether I have to let them set for a few days or do I lightly spray them with a

non gloss spray?

Can you please help me...

Thank you so much,

Crystal G. My simple answer? Do nothing. Oil pastels are a wonderful medium. They need little to no extras once you're done with the actual painting process. For most of my oil pastel paintings I simply frame them to protect the pastel from damage. The best way to frame oil pastels paintings is under glass with a mat and spacers. Even if you don't frame right away, after a few days the painting will get a thick skin that will protect it from light touching. Hope that helps you Crystal and all of my other pastel painters out there!

The website that I love for practicing digital art and sketching is having a poster contest. All you have to do to enter is to sign up at the site and create a drawing or digital painting using Rate My Drawing's online digital art software. Its free to sign up on the site and its free to enter the contest.

The best part is that more than one person wins the contest. In fact, there will be 250 winners. Their entries will be published into a 23" x 35" printed mosaic-type poster.

I just recieved this press release and I thought I would share it with my readers:

(Santa Monica, CA – June 2009) For its summer group show, July 11 to August 29, Samuel Freeman will be exhibiting “Mostly Sculpture (damn it)”, a group show of (mostly) sculpture.

While looking for new painters for a planned group exhibition, Mr. Freeman accidentally accumulated sculptors instead. His plan for a ‘New Paintings’ show was soon smothered by the weight and brilliance of these unplanned and unsought sculptors. “Mostly Sculpture (damn it)” is the outcome.

The exhibition will still include several two-dimensional works to highlight the object quality and physical interaction of sculpture, but will remain dedicated to the absurd, the delicate, and the impossible within contemporary sculpture. The roster of artists is drawn from within the gallery’s history and from new sources across North America: Berg, Myers and Kozul join the gallery from New York; Ko from Washington; Farrow out of San Francisco; Rath, Redding and Squires from Los Angeles; and Hollinger from Boston.

Artists include:

The Reverend Ethan Acres

Tim Berg & Rebekah Myers

Al Farrow

George Herms

Steve Hollinger

Ewerdt Hilgemann

Kazuo Kadonaga

Jae Ko

Kristian Kozul

Jake Longstreth
