Did you know that many of France’s great Champagne houses have always employed women winemakers? And that many of the finest winemakers in America happen to be women? Or that there are wineries that employ only women?
It has been said, though not yet proven, that women have an olfactory advantage when it comes to evaluating wine. There’s even a national organization called Women for Wine Sense for women who love wine.
Next March the second annual National Women’s Wine Competition will be held in Santa Rosa, California. Thousands of wines from male and female winemakers from around the world will compete for honors in 340 different classes of wine. Over 2,000 entries are expected and will be judged by an all-star cast of 40 leading women winemakers, wine educators, sommeliers, journalists and restaurateurs, including Canada-based writer, speaker and accredited sommelier, Natalie McLean.
