Since the 1960s Bhutan has followed a policy of conservation, with 42% of the nation's land being designated as protected areas. The country has 10 national parks, which range from the oldest park in Bhutan, the Royal Manas National Park which is the showpiece of the Kingdom, to Wangchuck Centennial Park which was launched in December 2008 as a tribute to the Wangchuck dynasty, who have been the country's monarchs since 1907.
