Nana
I had a Grandmother named Faye, but we called her Nana. She was a riot. She wasn’t your ordinary every day run-of-the-mill grandmother. She was unique and special. I am sure every kid thinks their grandmother is unique and special, however ours really was. Let me share with you why

My First Bike...
It was the year I turned nine. Nineteen Seventy-two. I wanted a bicycle in the worst way. My parents, who I thought were terribly over protective didn’t think I should have one. They were afraid I’d hurt myself. Or worse, get hit by a car. Every other child in our neighborhood had one. I think kids in our area, got them when they were six or seven. But not me.

Childhood Memories -- Birdy
Birdy was this very odd, but wonderful older woman who lived catty corner from us, across our alley. She was married to Erwin, who used to be a cameraman on a local television show called, "The JP Patches" Show on Kiro, Channel 7. He was also "Erwin the bus driver" and he used to pick up Asmaredla every morning for school. (She was a stuffed Raggedy Anne; they said was JP's little girl

She's Back and Armed With a Fresh Tomato Salad!
And as of late you can find me in the garden harvesting fresh tomatoes, watermelon, beans, peppers, carrots, and egg plant. My husband introduced me to the art of eating tomatoes warm off the vine several years ago. A little salt, a little mixture of olive oil and balsamic vinegar and viola! You have a mini meal or a scrumptious snack fit for a King or Queen alike.

|
Garlic and Rosemary Chicken -- Marna's Italian Salad
This is simple and fragrant. It's fool proof! I serve this with either wild rice, or fried potatoes. You could prepare polenta as well. I always serve a big Italian salad with this. Recipe to follow -- and of course red wine.

Pumpkin Fry Bread
Fry bread was, as far as I know, a Navajo tradition. But since the Europeans
came, a lot of Indian nations have banded together, - both politically and
culturally. One of the things that came out of that was swapping and
adapting recipes. Some tribes add potatoes to their recipe, some add yams:
whatever was abundant in their part of the country. Pumpkins grow well
here, so our grandparents incorporated that into our version.

My Son Looks Awful in a Dress
I used to be a vegetarian. When you are a serious vegetarian you learn to get crafty with pasta. I came up with the name of the dish at a photo-shoot my band had done where I was dawning a little Jackie O’ funeral number, hence,
“My Son Looks Awful In A Dress.”

|
Pasta Alla Norma
My friend Michelle from Iceland sent this neat recipe to me. In researching this recipe, I found this:

Italian Wedding Soup
Minestra Maritata or Italian Wedding Soup, really has nothing to do with a wedding. The name is mistranslation. To say two things go well together in Italian, you can say si sposono bene (they're well married) or, in the southern parts of Italy, that they're maritati, i.e. married

Harvest Recipes
Fall is my favorite time of the year. I think because I am not a big fan of super hot weather -- Fall is in-between. Crisp, cold mornings, and then warmish afternoons. T-shirt weather is what my Grandmother always deemed fall as.
Along with that, comes recipes of course. And I am a big fan of those recipes that we prepare with great care in the Fall! I can also eat soup all year around, however when Fall and Winter come about, the food becomes richer, and heartier-- sticking to ones ribs

A Recipe for Coping
I typically write a recipe column – however in the light of the events that started at 8:45 AM (EDT) on September, 11th, 2001 – I felt the need to write a more personal account of how I feel about what’s happened.

CHOCOLATE GRAND MARNIER SOUFFLE
I know what you are thinking -- Tofu? Trust me, this is really good, the Tofu takes on the flavor and gives this a great texture.
|
|
Swiss Chard Pie,Swiss Chard Pie
Chard looks kind of like spinach, same in color but with a colored stem. Also, I read on the net that the minerals found in both greens are more readily absorbed from chard which doesn't contain the inhibitor oxalic acid, and don’t ask me what that is, because I don’t know:),Chard looks kind of like spinach, same in color but with a colored stem. |
Spaetzle
Spaetzle means "little sparrows" in German, these tiny dumplings are one of the Chef's
excuses for driving two hours to my favorite German restaurant.
Traditionally served as a side dish to meats, just like noodles or
potatoes, they can be tossed with butter, or topped with gravy, pan
juices, or toasted bread crumbs
|
|
NEIMAN MARCUS SEAFOOD SALAD
I am assuming this is from the famous "Neiman Marcus" Department Store -- this one I haven't tried yet, but I know I shall soon!
|
|
GRAPE JUICE PIE

|
|
Pesto Rosso (Red Pesto)
The flavor of this sauce is so intense, you'll find that a little goes
a long way. Toss it with hot pasta, add it to salad dressings, or
spread a little on toast
|
|
Cheese Bread
Frankly, it was a bit of a challenge coming up with an appetizer for
our American Diner week because appetizers are not commonly featured
in these unpretentious restaurants. It is not uncommon, however, to
be greeted by a smiling waitress carrying a basket of freshly baked
breads and rolls to be munched on while you peruse the menu
|
|
Palak Murgh
This recipe is one that I received in a cooking class that I attended a
number of years ago. It's been a favorite ever since; if you like Indian
cooking, you know that most Indian dishes are extremely flavorful but not
necessarily hot-spicy. Everyone that I serve this dish to falls in love
with it, and it's relatively simple to prepare. I hope that you'll try it/

|
CARBONADA EN ZAPALLO
My name is Kerry and, although born in England, I am married to an
Argentine and have lived in this lovely country now for 21 years so think
an Argentine recipe is called for. When I first arrived I discovered that
it was true that most of the population only ate meat, bread and potatoes!
Over the years though it has slowly been changing although no one would
turn down a wonderful asado made with our grass fed beef!
|
|
Baked Orange Pecan French Toast
I received this in the mail about a month ago. Now I am an orange fanatic, and I was chompin at the bit to try this. However, I digress, I hawe not tried this yet. But it would make a lovely summertime breakfast! Let me know how you like it!
|
|
Fruit Kebabs
I haven't given quantities for this recipe, so make as many as your
family will enjoy. These are great for backyard cookouts, and can be
prepared on the grill or under the broiler. They also make a
wonderful dessert
|
|
Light Dessert Burritos

Stewed Mangos
Stewed Mango's are much better than stewed prunes:)
|
|
Strawberry Mousse
This dessert is remarkably easy to prepare, but be sure to use only
fresh, sun-ripened strawberries for the best results.
|
|
Cold Cherry Soup
Fruit soups are frequently served as dessert in Scandinavia, but the
Germans make a refreshing first course of them, especially in the summer.
Be sure to use fresh sour cherries if possible, or adjust the amount of
sugar if you must use sweet cherries

|
|
FRENCH BREAKFAST PUFFS
The
family joke that came out of it is that my kids loved these muffins so
much they started calling them "Dead Guy Muffins", a reference to my
penchant for making them for funerals.
|
|
Spinach - Artichoke Dip
Anytime there's a potluck, I'm
always asked to bring this dish. People who I've shared the recipe
with are now being asked to bring it to their potlucks.
|
|
Amanda's Marshmallow/Potato Cake
Hi. My name is Tripp Frohlichstein. This is a family recipe that actually
dates back, as far as we can tell, to the 1800's. Potato in cake may
sound odd but the ultimate taste is great when combined with the other
ingredients (no, if you didn't know potato was in this cake you'd
never guess).
|
|
Chocolate Meringue Pie
The meringue pie in general seems to be an American invention, with
lemon meringue pies making their debut sometime in the 19th century.
Other fillings followed, and my favorite is the chocolate meringue pie
that is still to be found in restaurants and diners all over the
country

|
Valentine's Day Brunch

Amaretto Cheese Cake Recipe
This came to me via email -- and I it looks REALLY REALLY good. I love Amaretto anyhow, so I can't imagine how you can go wrong with this. Thanks Jim!
|
|
Beef Irish Stew
Many readers will note that Irma Rombauer's recipe for Irish stew is
not traditional, in that it calls for beef rather than lamb or mutton,
among other variations. While it may be lacking in authenticity, it
is a perfect example of how Old World dishes have been modified over
the years to suit the American cook
|
|
Georgia Peach Cobbler
Narrowing down the choice for our soul food dessert was the hardest
part of putting this week's menu together because there are so many
wonderful sweet concoctions to choose from. I could have chosen sweet
potato, black bottom, or pecan pie, to name just a few, but I chose
peach cobbler because it seems to have been served in every Georgia
soul food restaurant I have ever been in.
|
|
Lime Soup
Lime Soup, for something different:)
|
|
Neapolitan Pork Roast with Potatoes
There are few things a satisfying or delicious as a perfectly cooked
pork roast. This is Mark Bittman's version of a classic recipe from
Naples

|
|
Jamaican Jerk Pork Ribs
This fiery Jamaican sauce can be used on fish, chicken, and beef as
well. Traditionally very spicy, you may want to tone it down if your
tastes don't run in that direction. As with all the recipes this
week, it is adapted from "All Around the World Cookbook" by Sheila
Lukins, Workman Publishing Company, 1994, available from Amazon.com at
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1563052377/worldwiderecipes

Stuffed French Toast
Peggy from Columbus OH here. I have one daughter, a significant
other, two dogs, and a cat. My family has always had certain holiday
traditions and breakfast on Christmas morning was one of them. One by
one, we would wake up, come downstairs and when everyone had gathered,
we would open gifts and wait for breakfast to be ready for serving.
The family favorite is Baked Stuffed French Toast filled with orange
cream cheese and served with orange butter and maple syrup. This is
put together on Christmas Eve and then popped into the oven Christmas
morning. When it is accompanied by either bacon, sausage or whatever
breakfast meat you prefer and served with a half a grapefruit that has
been drizzled with Grand Marnier, you have a wonderful very elegant
breakfast.
|
|
Thai Chicken Wings
Here is an exotic treatment for what seems to be everybody's favorite
finger food. You can cook these on the grill or in the oven, as I
have here.
|
|
Coconut Chicken Soup
Even though the lemon grass, slices of ginger, and chili peppers are
used only for flavoring and not intended to be eaten, they are
traditionally served in the soup. In Thailand it is up to the diner
to eat around them, but you may want to remove them prior to serving
|
|
Fettuccine with Sauce Monticello
This is a recipe was developed several years ago by an underpaid
teacher with two teenage boys to feed, and whose sons naturally wanted to
know what it was called. Lacking inspiration, the chef named it after the
small town in Georgia where he lived at the time. It's quick, easy,
inexpensive, and a crowd pleaser.
|
|
Roasted Vegetable Stock
All vegetarian considerations aside, you may find yourself using this
stock in place of chicken or beef broth in all of your recipes becauseof its intense flavor
|
|
Pistachio Instant Dessert
Another great recipe from my pregnancy list, this one comes from Michelle! I have developed a sweet tooth for sure, try it and let me know how it is!

Peanut Butter Soup
Being pregnant, I can't get enough "Peanut Butter"! Typically it's not my food of choice:) Anyhow, I came across this. I have no idea who the author is, but this looks REALLY GOOD!!!
|
|
Puchero
Let's keep an open mind. I admit to not having one when this first came to me in my mail box. But I *tasted* this, and you know what, it's really really good. I am not a big fan of meshing fruit and meat of any kind.
The French would call this dish "pot-au-feu," and in Mexico it is brightened up with the addition of fruits
|
|
Meinharts' Fresh Fruit Salad
I am not sure where this originated from, it came to me via email, and I thought it a fitting fruit salad for the end of Summer.
|
|
Sopaipillas
These puffy little fritters are reminiscent of New Orleans' famous
beignets.
|
|
Frogmore Stew
I bet you think this is really made with parts of a frog? WRONG! (thank goodness!) You really need to check this out, this was found at:http://www.chefrick.com/recipes/soups/frogmorestew/frogmorestew.html
|
|
Muffaletta Sandwich
Well now I am crusing back into my "neck" of the woods -- being part Italian, I can't get away from Italian food! And I found this recipe and I haven't tried it yet, but my tummy is growling thinking of it. Pretty weird name for a sandwich eh?
|
|
Lotus Flowers
This came to me because I love Chinese food. My friend sent it, as I was raving about Lotus Flowers I had tried. So I tried these at a favorite Chinese spot, and they are fabulous! I only hope that these will measure up!
|
|
Poached Scallop Salad
I admit, I haven't ever published a recipe, I wasn't crazy about. Well this is a first. Scallops are not my favorite sea food, but I am to understand this is tried and true, and folks swear by it. So you tell me!
|
|
Peach Parfait
At the risk of sounding repetitive, I wish more people would consider
eating fresh fruit for dessert as they have been doing in France for
centuries. This elegant method of serving makes it even more of a
treat.
|
|
Mango Preserves
This is mango season here in the Caribbean, and ripe mangoes can be
seen hanging from trees at the sides of the roads. For those of you
who aren't lucky enough to be able to pick your own, this recipe works
just as well with store-bought fruits although it won't be as much fun
to make.
|
|
Chocolate Hazelnut Truffles - It's deadly!
Oh my goodness - these are tried and *true*! These are almost as good as *you know what* !!! When hazlenuts and chocolate are combined, the result is of course - heaven!
|
|
Texas Beef Taco's
It must be because I am pregnant, but as of late, I am on a Taco kick! I found this recipe in Bon Appétit! I couldn't pass it up! Now I know the raisins and the pecans may cause you to scratch your head. However, I have found that different food combininations can and are often delightful! So try it!
|
|
QUICK ( and I mean QUICK) SAUSAGE PIZZAS
Now I don't know about you folks - but I have found homemade pizza to either be *really really* good, or *REALLY REALLY* bad.
I gotta give this one, two thumbs up
|
|
Fish Taco's
Ok - Now I want you to keep an open mind. The first time I heard the words "Fish Taco's" I thought, "what are they smokin?" And I kept that attitude until I tasted one, and have been hooked ever since. Be adventerous and try this, and let me me know what you think:)
|
|
Roasted Garlic Spread
Most garlic lovers will agree that the only thing better than garlic
is roasted garlic. This recipe makes a relatively mild spread, so if
you love garlic you might want to increase the amount.
|
|
Lemon Pound Cake
Lemon Pound Cake - rich, yummy, and a perfect dessert for any summer function.
|
|
Creme Brulee Catalan Style
Whether you call it egg custard, pudding, flan, creme caramel, creme
brulee, or crema catalana, variations on these egg-based desserts are
found all over the world. A touch of sophistication is achieved by
adding a thin, crisp topping of caramelized sugar, as in this classic
dessert from the Catalonia region of northeastern Spain.
|
|
Peaches Chianti
If there is one thing this little recipezine will be remembered for, I
hope it will be for providing numerous healthy alternatives to sugar
and fat-laden desserts that characterize the American diet. Here is
another one for future gastronomes to study
|
|
Ice Box Lemon Pie
Ice Box Lemon Pie, just like Grandma used to make! Finger lickin good!
|
|
Belgium Waffles
No visit to Belgium would be complete without a few waffles, and no
week of Belgian recipes would be complete without this one. The
difference between Belgian waffles and the ones we are more familiar
with is the yeast in the batter, which yields a lighter waffle with a
fresh-baked bread flavor.
|
|
Puffed Pancakes - Easy Easter Morning Recipe!
When I was a child, I remember my Nanna making these really fun pancakes, that she simply called: "Puff Pancakes". As an adult, I still love them. They are easy, delightful, filling, and everyone can help out in preparing them. My grandmother had a friend named Minda, she said this recipe came from Finland where she was from.
|
|
IRISH SALAD
I have to be honest, when this recipe was sent to me, I wasn't too sure -- but I tasted it, and you know, it's fabulous, so my fears were for nothing!
Tangy Irish cheddar or Cashel, an Irish blue cheese, is ideal for this typical main-course pub salad; you can substitute English cheddar or French Roquefort. Thick slices of buttered soda bread and some raisin tarts could round out the menu
|
|
It's Spring and Salad Time at the Suite!
I am going to publish a few recipes for yummy salads. It's that time of the year again, where salads provide a wholesome yet lighter side of eating. Fresh veggies we know are so healthy, and good for our bodies, and who says we have to be traditional, we can add fresh fruit to our salads, and give our tongues a surprise! So let's eat up and enjoy!
|
|
FILET MIGNON WITH SAUTEED MUSHROOMS
I had this recipe sent my way, and I tried it, and it's lovely. The filet is so tender, it's almost like slicing butter. I adore garlic, so I added more than the original recipe called for.

|
Chicken Dilly Dally
This dish hails from the delightful hill country of Bykmanova, where
all the highways are scenic and freshly paved, twisting and leaping
endlessly through glorious hills and tranquil valleys. The national
pastime there is Cafe Racing. Leather-clad motorcyclists cavort at
high speed from village to village, stopping every now and again to
fill up with gas and sample the mouth-watering cuisine served by the
many little Cafes and Bistros. Chicken Dilly Dally is a light-tasting
favorite, on the menu year-round, at a busy street-side restaurant in
called "The Fuel Injection". Many a time it is has caused the hungry
clientele to dilly dally over their lunch, savoring each juicy
mouthful

|
Sweetbreads with Morel Jus and Morel Green Soybean Cassoulet
Please direct any questions about this recipe to the author.
From: Diane Gorodetzer mailto:Dsg49@aol.com
My country is called the Isle of Langerhanus. It is located within
the Pancreas. The Insulino River runs throughout the country. The
people living on the Isle of Langerhanus are known as the Alphans and
Betans. The Alphans and Betans work well together without war or
pestilence.
I found a dish that reflects the inhabitants of the Isle of
Langerhanus' palate. It comes from "Life, Love & Lunch-- Recipes from
Chef Greg Picolo at Maison de Ville."

|
Plantain Fritters (Tostones)
Plantain Fritters (Tostones) Plantains, the oversized cousin of the banana, are becoming more
widely available throughout the U.S., although it is sometimes
difficult to find them in both their green (unripe) and yellow (ripe)
states. The green is preferred for this recipe, but the ripe will do
in a pinch.
|
|
Chicken with Forty Cloves of Garlic
The main dish of our "Low-Fat Trip Around the World" is a reduced fat
version of a classic French dish. Please don't be intimidated by
the amount of garlic in this recipe, since it becomes mellow and sweet
with cooking. Spread the garlic on bread or toast for a special
treat, or do as I do and eat the cloves whole (minus the peel, of
course) along with the chicken.

|
Lady Baltimore Cake
This came to me via Chef's around the World:American author Owen Wister, who also wrote "The Virginian," made this
cake famous with the publication of his novel "Lady Baltimore" in
1906, in which the cake was a favorite at the Lady Baltimore Tearoom
in Charleston, South Carolina. Many recipes exist for this cake, and
most are rather complicated. Here is a simplified version for our
"Home Cooking" dessert.
|
|
Pot Roast YUM YUM!
Nothing says home cooking to me like a pot roast. I believe this
dish and its many variations have been around for hundreds, and
probably even thousands of years. If you choose to serve yesterday's
potato pancakes with this, you might prefer to omit the potatoes.
|
|
Flan de Pina (Colombian Pineapple Custard)
Like so many dishes with regional variations, flan is to be found all
over Latin America, frequently flavored with local ingredients. This
pineapple-flavored version comes from Colombia.
|
|
Jambalaya for the Brave!
I discovered this about ten years ago! My friend Sharon served this too me, gave me the basic recipe, and I tinkered with my own version and this is what I have come up with, enjoy!

|
Ham Ham Ham!
If you are tired of the same old Ham recipes, check these out, maybe you might find something here worth trying -- Ham is so versatile, you can do just about anything with it:)
|
|
Pot Pies
A well prepared pot pie is just plain heaven. Here is a simple, yet delicious pot pie recipe that I believe my grandmother made from time to time. Homemade is always better than anything you could possibly find in the frozen food section at your local grocer. Many say the secret of course is in the crust. I think it all has to do with the combination of spices. I am a firm believer that the simpler a recipe, the cleaner the taste. Combining spices can be tricky. This recipe shows any cook, regardless of experience, how wonderful mixing spices can be. Enjoy!
|
|
BAKED ARTICHOKES
You know, I wasn't terribly sure about this recipe when I received it. However, a good friend of me tried this in her test kitchen, and she gave it an "8" for rating. So I think I am going to try it. I hadn't ever thought about baking an artichoke, until now. Try it and tell me what you think.

The Great American Hamburger
What makes a great hamburger? First there's the meat. You want to use a flavorful cut, like sirloin (for uptown burgers), or chuck or round (if you're feeling more democratic). The meat should be ground twice - first through the coarse plate of the grinder, then through the fine plate. And it shouldn't be too lean. Fifteen to 20 percent fat is ideal.

Grilled Shrimp Salad
In the heat of summer who wants to cook? I certainly don't! I know that even in the luxury of an air conditioned house, during the warmest part of the day I don't wish to turn on my oven for anyone.
Here is delightfully different salad that isn't terribly difficult to prepare, riddled with Jumbo Prawns and a spicy dressing. So fire of the grill instead!

Grilled Lobster - Yes - Grilled Lobster!
The flavor of this dish is direct, honest, and impeccable, and its simplicity is a tribute to the inherent beauty of food. As is true in most cases, if you use high quality fresh ingredients, the best thing to do is leave them alone and let the taste come through . Grilled corn on the cob is a great side dish here

Passover - a time to celebrate!
Passover is the 8 day observance commemorating the freedom and exodus of the Israelites (Jewish slaves) from Egypt during the reign of the Pharaoh Ramses II.
It is a time of family gatherings and lavish meals called Seders. The story of Passover is retold through the reading of the Haggadah, the Book of Exodus.
With its special foods, songs, and customs, the Seder is the focal point of the Passover celebration. Passover begins on the 15th night of the Jewish month of Nissan, this year (2000) the first night of Passover is Thursday, April 20th.
