Mount Herman Trail in Monument, Colorado
With slightly cooler weather, Mt. Herman is the perfect quick getaway hike. The leaves had only begun turning colors when we did this hike, but I suspect it would be an excellent trail for watching the fall colors for a little while.

The Crags - updated and republished
Towering pines and whispering aspens ... tall, rocky outcrops ... a gurgling creek and cute chipmunks. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, there's a view at the top too.

Preparing for a 14'er
Someone asked me, ""How do I prepare for a fourteener?" Let's discuss how you prepare to hike a fourteener or just a very long hike in the mountains.

Mount Shavano
Mount Shavano is near the southern end of the Sawatch mountain range and 15 miles northwest of Salida. The peak is often combined as a double-bagger with Mount Tabegauche, but we encountered a storm and completed only Shavano. Come hear the story.

Getting Everyone Involved
In these current market conditions, with all the layoffs, many companies are looking for ways to motivate their employees and provide some relief from the stress. Why not try a hike?
Mount Columbia
Mount Columbia is in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness of the Sawatch Range. We did this one in 11 hours in mid-June. We did face the nightmare of a scree slope descent. We'll tell you about an alternate route you may want to take up and back.

Wow, a 14'er in the snow and the cold and the wind! You really have to hear our story.

Strolling in Palmer Park
The weather in November and December will often keep the hikers in town. So, what's a hiker to do? Let's hit some of the trails in town, shall we?

Moonlight Hike
What a delightful idea ... hiking in the dark by the light of the moon. The Moonlight Hike is a planned event on the Friday night closest to the full moon. Very romantic!
Stanley Canyon
The first mile of this trail is difficult and it climbs fast and hard. After the first mile, the trail levels out and in a little while, you come to a very pretty lake.
Mount Cutler
Mount Cutler - the perfect trail for beginners or when you have lowlander family in town. Views of the Seven Falls, views of the city, and a gentle, short climb.

Eleven Mile Canyon
Eleven mile canyon, what a wonderful place - beaver, hummingbirds, a snake or two, boulders to climb ... hey, what's that? A bear!

Twin Eagles Trail in the Lost Creek Wilderness
The Twin Eagles trail is deep within the Lost Creek Wilderness. What a wonderful place to get lost too! I can't imagine a better way to spend a warm spring day than wandering in the Lost Creek Wilderness.
New Santa Fe Trail
The New Santa Fe trail runs from the very north end of Colorado Springs to south of downtown. It is a remarkable trail - wide and flat with lots of traffic. Last weekend, we helped plant more shade for this trail.
St. Mary's Falls
St. Mary's Falls is a lovely, rushing waterfall at the end of a comfortably long trail. The trail winds through aspen and evergreen trees beside a creek. It is an exceptional hike in any season.
Seven Bridges at North Cheyenne
Deep evergreens, large boulders, a rushing creek and wooden bridges bound this trail on all sides. There are seven bridges on this trail, hence the name, however one is rickety and one is nearly hidden in the brush. This only makes it more interesting.
Green Mountain Falls and Garden of Eden
The Green Mountain Falls trail leads up past the falls and into an area called the Garden of Eden. If you continue on the trail, you will arrive at lower Catamount Lake, but we encountered snow and decided to lounge by the creek instead.
Rambling in Chautauqua Park
Chautauqua Park is lovely in the spring. Now is a great time to take a deep breath, shake off the drudgery of winter, shake out a blanket, and stare up at the sky and the kites.

Gregory Canyon Trail to Saddle Rock
From Boulder, Colorado, we will take the Gregory Canyon trail around Saddle Rock. This is a nice loop even in these end-of-winter days when the weather teases you with some warmth. You will find the shady spots are still covered with snow, but the creek is starting to rush just a bit.

Hiking Safety for You and Your Kids
Let's not pretend, hiking in the outdoors does have its risks. Yes, the risks are minimal with a little common sense, but Search and Rescue teams would not exist if hikers did not get lost or in trouble. Let's take a look at the best safety measures.

Paul Intemann Memorial Nature Trail
The Paul Intemann Memorial Nature loop branches off the Section 16 trail and heads toward Manitou Springs. This is a well-populated trail, so be sure to keep the dogs on leashes. The swiftly falling snow made visibility a factor when we did this hike last weekend, but the pictures turned out terrific. Come join us on this saunter through the snow. "Walking in a winter wonder land ..."
Garden of the Gods
This is a gentle hike, even a stroll, with spectacular views of high-rising red rock formations. If you get the right angle, you can even catch a picture with the red rocks in the foreground and Pikes Peak in the back. It is a breathtaking walk and best done on a sunny day with a camera. Of course, finding a sunny day in Colorado isn't very hard, so enjoy!
Barr Camp Trail
Barr Camp trail is a long hike - seven miles one way! It is as exciting in the winter as in the summer, but autumn, when the Aspens change color, is the best season for this hike. Great trail for dogs, good trail for the more advanced small hikers, and it ends at a camp ground.

Hiking Colorado Trails
Hiking is an ideal sport, requiring very little gear and you can take your children along. Colorado has more than 50 peaks higher than 14,000 feet in elevation, so the craze of bagging fourteeners will be included during fourteener season.
