Fast Food
My southern sisters take heed and read a calorie counter before pulling up to the drive-in window. You just may be surprised.

Discipline 101
Parents have a type of internal wiring that aids them in considering a child's feelings. However, over the last few decades the information age has short-circuited the route to common sense.

Madame Esmé: A Review
Georgia's dedicated teachers may appreciate and feel a certain camaraderie with the author of Educating Esmé: Diary of a Teacher's First Year.

Southern Rock With a Message
God-fearing Southern parents raised Stapp, Creed's lead singer. He listened to rock on the sly. His father was a Pentecostal minister, spreading the Word from a pulpit. It seems the son followed closely behind but not quite in Dad's footsteps.

What Did God See?
The days and weeks following the terrorist attack on America left many writers searching for words. There were assignment deadlines, but the only words some of us could find came from a deeper place. The following piece is what I had to write before I could finish an assignment.

Rio Bravo
Gentle souls, rambunctious spirits, tired minds, Southerners and our Northern brothers and sisters deserve a few minutes to kick back and escape. Rio Bravo is just the medicine for what ails you.

Exposed Fear Loses Power
Many children living in the United States tend to like the excitement portrayed in action-adventure movies. Yesterday the action was too real and the video seemed to be stuck on rewind.

Musings on Snakes and Stuff
This little piece of writing is about the South and me and let's just see where it goes. Now, I'm not going to edit out my "Southernness." So if anyone reading this has an aversion to slow colorful eccentric wanderings, let me just say, I write other stuff as well, but this is going to come from where I come from.

"Here on Earth"
The romantic drama Here on Earth, starring Chris Klein, Leelee Sobieski and Josh Hartnett, strikes one as the kind of movie that elicits sarcasm, anger, sadness and understanding.
My Brother's Keeper
My little girl said hello into the receiver and handed me the phone. About one hour and 400 paces later I put the quiet telephone back into the charger.
Sad "Message"
Kevin Costner, Robin Wright Penn, and Paul Newman star in a bittersweet romantic movie based on Nicolas Sparks' bestseller, "Message in a Bottle."
School Days
My son cried a lot when he was a baby. I held him. Most nights we fell asleep in the easy chair. His small body fit perfectly across my abdomen -- his tiny head snuggled down in the crook of my left arm. At the time, I was equipped to give him everything he needed.

Familiarity
When I lived in the city my next door neighbor's antics were familiar to me. She enjoyed working in her yard. Her presence outside was comforting.
Fading Away
Life is a dancing display of all the literaure ever written. Southern life oozes with drama, poetry, and spirituality. All one has to do is slow down and notice.
The Old School
While driving through the South, looking for a vacation get-a-way this summer, take a moment to ponder those old abandoned buildings with the curved drives and concrete walkways.
Hugs
My mother had a heart attack when I was fourteen. I will never forget the debilitating fear.
The Wise and Beautiful Pecan
Pale green buds and flowers burst forth overnight on the pecan tree outside my window. Twigs extending out at odd angles from massive limbs appear decorated by an unseen hand.
Sorrow
Daddy handed me Mama's beige open-weave sweater two weeks after Mama died. That's about all that was taken out of the house of Mama's. Her lipstick still sat in the holder on the blue tiled shelf ten yearts later.

Precious Memories
Here's one for daydreamers, lovers of a southern sunset, and gracious hosts who welcome precious memories.

"Soul of the Sky"
I was reading "Soul of the Sky," a book about weather, when the entire city of Savannah fled hurricane Floyd. It was an awesome experience seeing a traffic jam in our small town of approximately 300 people. Here is the review I did a few days after the folks from Savannah returned home.

Generations
We southerners have been accused of being eccentrics. Folks from Savannah to Rome don't seem to mind that little barb as we enjoy talking to all our kinfolks; those living as well as those who have gone on to the great beyond. We also tend to wander back to the old homeplace when it becomes vacant....

Gregg Allman Sings the Blues
The Allman Brothers Band was grinding out the blues in the still of my Georgia night. I sat down in the far corner and listened to the slow, soul-tearing yearnings-"mmm-sweet Melissa."
The Old School
My car tires ground into a familiar mixture of dirt and gravel as I pulled ito the parking lot of the old school. This was as close to the abandoned building as I'd come in years.

Tale of the Preserve Making
Georgians are known storytellers. We love spinning tales about our ancestors from creaking old rocking chairs, while sizing up the spread at family unions, or while sitting in the grass under huge old trees.
Georgia's Unsung Musicians
Lyrical voices echo through the heart and soul of Georgia. Johnny Mercer, Little Richard, and the Allman Brothers are just a spattering of our state's melody. New artists spring up out of Georgia's red clay each year and are guided by less known music lovers whose passion to pass on the melody becomes a gift to the next generation.

The Magic
Larry Munson, voice of the Georgia Bulldogs, is a welcome guest in our home on Saturday afternoons in the fall. His gruff voice rumbles through my living room like a freight train, enticing an irregular heartbeat as he implores us in radio land "to get the picture."
Georgia's Rome
Two hundred years ago the settlemet known as Head of Coosa was among the largest in the vanishing Cherokee Nation. The Cherokee found this land a worthy dwelling site as tradition held that anywhere three rivers came together was holy ground.
Cobb's Gold
Relaxed after my stroll through historic downtown Macon, I entered the theater and settled back to be entertained by a man who knows the streets of downtown Macon personally, musician/storyteller/writer, David Clark.

Savannah
Present day Savannah embraces expansion as she clings to her past. Oglethorpe's sageness is called upon today as the city wrestles with the intrusions of modern life.
Barnsley Gardens
Read the history, legend, and present day status of Barnsley Gardens. This land, home to the Cherokee and the Barnsley's, has now been turned into a resort which has retained the charm of Woodlands.
