Sometimes we have to sit back and recognize the uniqueness our kids bring to the table. As the parent of an aspie, I've seen firsthand the hurt and disappointment that my child goes through every day with respect to other kids. As a school bus driver, I've witnessed that same hurt and disappointment for others now as well. Social skills are not intuitive for those with Asperger Syndrome - they have to be learned. And as parents and educators it is up to us to instill the basics. But how? We spend our days encountering many disapproving comments and looks from the uninformed public. I've finally learned to tolerate it and ignore the misguided comments. Is the term "Aspie" politcally incorrect that has negative connotations associated with it? I was about to find out. Ruling out ADHD in favor of Asperger's Asperger's Syndrome is often misdiagnosed ADHD due to their extreme similarities. While they can co-exist for many years, ruling out ADHD seems to be the obvious step with respect to my son. Having a special needs child within the public school system can be a frustrating and exasperating time. But if you are fortunate to land in an accepting environment like I was, the experience can be more fulfilling than you ever imagined. Coming to terms with Asperger's Syndrome and parenting said aspies, can be a trying time. As the parent of a child having AS, I have learned to lighten up and think outside the proverbial box.
