ArkansasBertha SutliffLatest Articles...the coming year of 2001 would forever go into the history books as one of the most trying times the United States and its citizens, and even the world itself, would ever see. This memory was not a memory of celebration, but a memory of a little boy that didn’t get what he wanted for Christmas. I’ve collected recipes from neighbors since I was a young girl still at home. Some are old and forgotten recipes and some are recipes improved with today’s ingredients. THE PRETTIEST CHRISTMAS TREE ON THE MOUNTAIN Suddenly Daddy motioned for us to be quiet. As we peeked over the knoll of earth, holding our breath so as not to make a single sound, we saw what Daddy was looking at. Arkansas also has cities aglow with Christmas lights. Small cities, large cities, one-stop towns…anywhere you want to drive you will see Christmas everywhere. The northern half of Arkansas is mountainous. Snow is a rarity or at least a snow of significant inches. When it does arrive, it brings the world of the mountain people to a standstill. An Arkansas family celebrates Thanksgiving Day at the house where it all started for them. This house is the heart that beats and keeps this family alive and happy. Feed wasn't the only commodity that came in cloth bags, so did flour, salt and oatmeal. The flour sacks, once emptied and washed, were the softest and finest material of the lot. This material was most often used to make underwear, baby clothes and even diapers Daddy heard the dogs chasing the deer through the woods. Suddenly he was confronted with the decision of helping the creature or leaving it to the dogs. She was the first to hear the music. Her face turned deathly white and her sewing basket dropped from her lap. Before she could rise from her rocker, John stepped to the staircase door.
