Working for the Man Zine

© Kelly Love Johnson

I recently visited New York City and, of course, dropped in at Tower Records. Tower is a well-known source for buying zines - they have an entire section of their magazine racks devoted to zines! I bought several and stuck them in my bag to read on the plane on the way home.

It was one of these zines that nearly got me banned from Delta and shushed by one of the flying waitresses. Working for the Man, a quarter page sized zine produced in NY, made me laugh hysterically, tears running down my cheeks, sides aching - the works, on an otherwise quiet plane. Seriously - I could not control myself. This zine is, in a word, hilarious. If you have EVER held a job, ANYWHERE, even if you liked your job, you will get a kick out of this zine.

The issue I was reading is #5. Best dollar I ever spent. The table of contents includes: meet Mr. How Do You Feel, check out the different ways in which the same job is described, read a couple of job interview hypotheticals, review the various boss types, read the job interview thank you note you wish you could send, and more. They have an online version: http://www.workingfortheman.com, which I promptly looked up when I got home. This is one of the articles that caused my embarrassing paroxysms of laughter: http://www.workingfortheman.com/thetruth... .

The editor, J. Yamaguchi, describes the zine on the web site:
"Working for the Man explores the horror of the workplace through, hopefully, humorous stories, and, hopefully, provides a much-needed antidote to the doldrums of dealing with a bad boss and a dead-end job. "

Working for the Man is published three times a year. Read about the print version, order back issues and read reviews of Working For the Man.

And they have a book coming out!

About the upcoming book:
The Working for The Man book will be available soon. Over 50 stories from the front lines of the workplace, where bad bosses rule, the copy machine is always out of order or in use, and the guy in the cubicle next to you who whistles tunes from The Sound of Music says "Good morning!" every damn day just a little to cheerfully.

Working For The Man - Stories From Behind the Cubicle Wall, Vol. 1 will include the best stories from the print zine, as well as stories from the website. The book continues the effort to humorously explore the horror of the workplace, and will provide a much-needed antidote to the doldrums of dealing with a bad boss and a dead-end job.
