"The Yellow Rage" Print Zine

© Kelly Love Johnson

San Francisco print zine, The Yellow Rage is a folded-and-side-stapled-on-8 1/2x11 white paper personal zine ("perzine"). The editor is a 26-year-old woman named Puppet. Most of the writing is hers, but there are some black & white drawings by contributors. Volume 2, Issue I is called "Who Am I 2 Me?"

The writing in this zine is good. The essays (skaterchicks, therapy, race) are short and sweet. My friend Marie and I read the zine while waiting for a friend at the airport. Marie's favorite article was "Half/Half" - a story about being half-Asian.

I live in San Francisco now. It's okay to be Asian here. That's an amazing concept to me. I grew up in Reno and sure as hell didn't fit in anywhere there.

I was made fun of, taunted, teased. Asked stupid shit like "do you speak English?" "Are you Filipino, (I don't even know how to spell it) Mexican, Japanese, Chinese...?"

I personally liked "Dear Paxil" the best. This issue is Puppet's "Welcome Back to Reality" and she is no longer taking happy pills, but I liked the honesty in this piece.

"The drug of my doctor's choice. Pick me apart. Separate me from my heart my emotions my feelings my sex drive. Give me heartburn and diarrhea, cramps, headaches, nausea, and fatigue. Tell me stories about how crazy I was without you. Tell me about how much better I am now. Tell me how happy I am to be with you. Keep the voices quiet. Tell them to shut up and pretend they don't exist. Tell me I'm not alone and that I'm loved. Tell me that who I used to be isn't important or special. Tell me how great I am going to be. Promise to take care of me."

(from Puppet)
The Littleton shootings, but from the shooters point of view. I wanna hear stories from people who had a hard time in high school and who, even though they may not freely admit it, identify with the shooters and what they were feeling. Skaterchicks are an ongoing theme and I do love to hear about people and their pets as well as their therapists.
