There's a section called "Welcome to my Neurosis," updated weekly, in which Miss Lohr writes about anything she happens to be currently obsessing about. Girls can submit their nominations for the "Dick List," a list of men who suck by the women who once loved them. "Meals Men Like" has pointers and recipes for the girl who wants to please her guy by stuffing his face. One of the tips: "Men love meat. If he doesn't eat meat, girls, he's probably a sissy. Beware." Also: Recipes for Hawaiian Meatballs, Frito Pie, and Chicken a la King. One of my favorite sections is called "Working for the Man" which has tips from Nikol, as well as from readers, on what to do "the next time you're filled with self-loathing for working like a slave and letting yourself get kicked around for a few pennies." This is where you'll learn how to plot constantly, fake-work, cultivate your hatred, spread rumors, and develop a work related illness. Some of the other areas: "Ask Queenie" - an advice column for the lovelorn, the sloppy and the dim, "Confessions," "Products" - recommended by Nikol and readers of DH, "Collections" - Nikol's own personal collections of naked lady playing cards and cheap plastic snow globes, "Cocktail Lounge" - recipes for drinks and cocktail hors d'ouvres, and "Linktastic" - great links to other hipster sites on the Internet. Question: What was your motivation for starting Disgruntled Housewife? Nikol Lohr: I originally started DH in 1996 as a print zine, but I thought I was too square & that no one would want to read it. My boyfriend was a real deadbeat at the time & I was submerged in a state of cheery Prozac-ed irony & thought it would be funny for me of all people to be giving house-wifely advice. I was then working full time so that he could sit on the couch and smoke pot, but I was also obsessed with keeping up a nice impression (just for myself, really; to everyone else it was transparent, but the Prozac made me pretty suggestible to a sense of happiness, well-being & normalcy) of domestic bliss, so I was also a full time housewife.
