Furnishing Your Hong Kong Flat

Most flats in Hong Kong are unfurnished. If they are furnished and you're staying longer, it may cost you a lot in your monthly rental than if you furnish the flat yourself. Another thing, the furniture provided may not be agreeable to your taste. Plus, they are most likely the furniture left by previous tenants. This means they are not working quite well. Like the fridge may leak or the washing machine needs a certain way of handling before you can get to make it work.

Hong Kong is a very transient place with people constantly on the move. Therefore second-hand furniture is always available. The Sunday edition of the South China Morning Post occupies a half-page classified ads section of second-hand furniture and appliances.

Notice boards at Wellcome Supermarket and Park & Shop sometimes carry notices of second-hand furniture for sale. At Lamma Island's advertisement wall just off the ferry pier, second-hand furniture sales posted by residents leaving is a familiar sight. One can also post any item that you need. If you're lucky and observant you can also get thrown-away furniture left at garbage bins.

If you prefer to buying new items, Pricerite has many showrooms in Hong Kong. The Swedish furniture company, IKEA has two branches. These are at the second level of Pioneer Centre along Nathan Road in Mongkok and at the basement of Park Lane in Causeway Bay just across the Windsor House. If you prefer furniture with a more exotic bent, Tequila Kola with branches in Prince's Building in Central and at Admiralty is the place to go. Another place to go for furnishings are the warehouse emporiums in Aberdeen and Ap Lei Chau.

For low-price dining and kitchen utensils visit any Japan Home Center branch. The ubiquitous Ten Dollar Shops where nothing over HK$10 are sold is another option.
