Eating On A BudgetYou’ll be preparing food into four categories, Breakfasts, Lunches, Suppers, and Snacks. I’ll give you some ideas for each category, but you can usually find camping recipe books at your library that will give more ideas. Package each meal’s main ingredients individually and guesstimate how much of ingredients such as salt, sugar, etc. you’ll need. These can be packed together. Label each bag with the day number, category and any special instructions. Breakfast Cold Cereal: If you plan to eat a lot of this, just take the box, but if you want variety or just to eat it once or twice, put a serving into a Ziplock bag. BONUS: Just add milk and sugar to the bag and you don’t need any dishes! Oatmeal: You could go with those handy pre-packaged instant cereals, but I personally find they aren’t filling enough and I usually have to eat two or three. You might prefer going with a cup of quick oats, to which you add 1-1/2 cups boiling water. You may need to adjust the amount of water depending on the brand. Let it sit for five to ten minutes, toss in some raisins or fresh fruit and enjoy. Bagels and Cream Cheese: If you have a cooler with you, cream cheese will keep for a couple of days. Plan this meal for the beginning of your trip. Fresh Fruit: Not only will you be able to start your trip with this versatile food, but it is readily available at supermarkets along the way. Lunches Sandwiches: These are easily the most common travelling lunch food. Bring a loaf of bread from home, pick up more on the way. You can bring your favourite jams, jellies, and a jar of peanut butter, as well as a variety of other toppings. Just remember that lunch meats don’t last long in warm cars, so they should be eaten within a few hours of purchase. If you’re travelling alone and can’t eat the amount of meat that is in a package, buy from the deli counter. Suppers Noodles: You can purchase packages of instant noodles for fairly cheap at Oriental food stores. These cook up in the microwave or even in boiling water. Rice and Veggies: Rice can be cooked in the microwave, ½ cup of rice with 1 ½ cups of water and cook on HI for 10 minutes. Add fresh, sliced veggies, or microwave them too. Macaroni and Cheese: Follow the instructions on
