When Good Trips Go BadSounds like a nightmare, right? Well, it was at first. I was so depressed the first night, as I crawled into my hotel bed, I was seriously thinking of just going home the next day. But when I woke up the next morning, the rain had stopped. It wasn’t sunny, but it wasn’t wet, either. So I cheered up, jumped in the car and took off. Not ten minutes later I hit rain. At this point, I was still quite lost, but having had a good night’s sleep, I managed to stay cheerful until I finally reached Port Townsend, where it wasn’t raining. I ended up having a great time, wandering through the fascinating shops in Port Townsend, checking out the National Parks in the area and finally driving down to Tacoma where I watched a movie and slept in a rest area for the night. The next day the sun came out and it got nice and warm. I checked out some factory outlet stores and a couple of malls on my way up to the border. In the end, I enjoyed my trip immensely. So, why did I tell you that? Because even the best plans will get screwed up. No matter what, something always goes wrong. You have the choice, you can get down in the dumps and ruin your whole trip, or you can just press on and find something to make it better. Here are a few tips for fixing up a messed up vacation. 1. Get a good night’s sleep whenever possible. Things always look better in the morning and it’s easier to figure out a solution when you’re well rested. 2. Call home. A good chat with your mom or dad or a best friend can be just the pick-me-up that you need. Plus, two heads are better than one, when you’re solving problems. 3. Have something to eat. If you’re getting stressed over something, you might forget to eat. Low blood sugar is a surefire way to get really cranky. A glass of chocolate milk, a candy bar or soda will give you a quick boost, but don’t forget to eat proper meals. 4. Choose something fun to do. Even if it’s just taking a walk through a park or watching some kids play at a playground or watching a movie, actively choosing to do something you’ll enjoy will make you feel better. 5. Bring a good, light book with you on your trip.
