If the flexible dates just don't work for you, check out a couple different dates, a day before or after your chosen date. There may be a discount.
Also, remember that travelling in the off-season is much cheaper. When the off-season occurs depends on your destination. Mexico is very popular in the winter, while colder countries are most frequented during the summer. Holidays are more expensive to fly, but right after, the airfares usually drop.
