Intuition and Spiritual Agreements

Ever wonder why a particular person is in your life? Or maybe you are drawn to someone new for no reason at all that you can explain?

It may be due to a spiritual agreement. Spiritual agreements come in all forms and durations. You have a spiritual agreement with every significant person in your life, whether you realize it or not.

What is a spiritual agreement? Well, basically it is an agreement between two immortal spirits that they will come back together for a particular purpose at a future time, in a future life. Sometimes karmic elements come into play here. Maybe someone helped you in a big way five lifetimes ago, and this lifetime you are ready to return the favor. It could be an agreement to heal, to love, to teach, to learn, to comfort, to support, or to encourage.

Some spiritual agreements involve a short term situation--like helping someone through a rough time, or helping them learn a particular spiritual lesson. Others are for a lifetime or more, and can get quite complex.

Sometimes it's hard to recognize and validate why you and another person have come together because the agreement has gotten muddled. You may be here with your brother this lifetime to learn about communication and working together, but perhaps you got stuck in competition and fighting because you missed some of the lessons you were here to teach one another.

Most spiritual agreements are positive--in that they benefit one or both parties. But sometimes, one person will take advantage of the situation and take TOO MUCH from the person doing the giving. Or perhaps the giver is just trying too hard and doesn't realize that the receiver needs to do some things on his or her own.

Sometimes, it is hard to see that you have a spiritual agreement with a person who you don't like, or resist intensely. These can be some of the best agreements, though, because irritation can be a powerful motivator for change!

You can take stock of your spiritual agreements just by sitting down and taking some time to note what kind of communication you have with a particular person. What is the general theme of your communication? What do you usually talk about? How often do you talk--are you there for each other only during crises, or all the time? Who is usually giving more to whom? Does the relationship feel validating, like everything is working? Or does it feel like something is missing or stuck and you don't know how to get it to move forward? Is there something that you can learn about by spending time with this person? Is there something that you really just don't like about this person, and can that teach you something about yourself and how you are in the world?

I think of my intuition as a muscle. The more I use it, the stronger and easier to use it becomes. Imagery helps. When I need an answer to a momentary dilemma (such as where did I put whatever-it-is I ...
