A Plan of Attack

Planning your business is just as important as running it, and this is where the all-important Business Plan comes in. Generally speaking, your business plan is a formal document that you write in order to outline your entire business's operations. On a more personal level, your business plan is what will allow you to conceptualize your business as a whole. It should outline your purpose, your goals, and how you will accomplish them. It is, arguably, one of the most important aspects to running your own business. It is also one of the most neglected aspects.

Many business owners avoid writing and updating their business plans for a number of reasons. They may dislike writing; they may get caught up in the every-day running of the business. Or they may consider the business plan to be part of the start-up phases only. Whatever the reason, let me assure you that your business plan is vital to your success as a business-owner.

A Holistic View of Your Business

There are many reasons why you should write and regularly update your business plan, not the least of which is that your business plan should help you to conceptualize all the different aspects of your business. Many women choose to go into business for themselves because they want to do something they love and something they're good at-without all the politics and bureaucracy we run into at the office. These are good reasons. Your business will certainly be that much better if you are doing something you love. But as many women entrepreneurs quickly find out, running a business is much much more than simply doing what you love. As such, many are ill-prepared for the "other stuff" involved with their chosen business, and end up encountering numerous problems they weren't expecting.

Your business plan, in this case, can help you plan for all the different areas you may not have expected when the idea first occurred to you to open up shop. And if you've already been running your business, keeping on top of your business plan can really help you to keep on top of your business. It can help you to map out your goals and strategies; it can act as a guide for you as you plan marketing, customer care, and financial planning for your company. And it can help you to look at your business objectively, to see what areas are working well and what needs improvement.
