If you can face all this, though, you will have a horse with qualities you would not have found in any other way. You will know exactly what your foal has experienced every day of his life. You will understand him better than any other horse you will ever own. When the time comes for backing him, you will find it goes more smoothly, because his trust for you will make it easier for him to overcome his fears. And when he begins to bring home the prizes, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that his temperament, obedience and performance are to a large extent down to your own skill.
