pink. The deciduous types will bloom from late summer to fall and evergreens ones from spring to early summer. Evergreen types do not need pruning and deciduous ones should have a hard pruning in spring to about 1 1/2 to 3 inches from the start of the previous year’s growth. Flowers are blue, red, pink, white, or purple in more or less elongated spikes or racemes. Blooms from late spring to early fall and has evergreen foliage in light or dark green, purple-green, silver or variegated silver-green. In the “Whipcord” varieties, the leaves present an appearance which is very like the needles of a cypress or other conifer. Prefers full sun but tolerates light shade and does better in well-drained soil. The hardiness varies with varieties from barely hardy -5°C (23°F) to hardy -15°C (5°F). Lightly pruning for the broad-leaved varieties in May but not into old wood. The whipcord varieties should not be pruned at all, for they can sulk or even die from it.

With a little attention, your shrubs will contribute to your yard and garden for years to come. Choosing the right ones to begin with, then maintaining them properly, will pay big dividends in the end.
