Shrubs are the primary occupant of our gardens and far from being simply a leafy plant. In some gardens, most of the flowers are those that appear on shrubs. The possibilities of planting combinations and mixtures are endless.

You should choose shrubs that will have a long flowering period for small gardens, but should be very careful about your choices. I have mentioned in my other articles about clashing colours, be aware. We often want a shrub that will bloom longer and if that is what you are looking for you’ll find them in the list below.

If your shrubs have difficulty flowering or poor growth you should check their location or soil. It is usually an indication that they need more light, more water or more nutrients. It is frustrating to have plants that cost a lot and perform poorly. Always add plenty of compost, manure and handfuls of bone meal before planting and follow the plant requirements for the best results. It will help them to establish themselves quickly and strongly. If you have an aphid problem, just wash them off with a strong stream of water or with a couple drops of dishwashing liquid per gallon of water if they are persistent. But they are generally not a serious problem.

There is a lot of confusion about where shrubs end and perennials begin. It is true that the way we prune them can determine the way they are classified. Many plants are in that category and will remain for a long time. Anyway, if it serves you well, the job is done.
