Jimmy Cannon is remembered for his columns of one liners titled "Nobody Asked Me But...." There were many memorable statements, such as "Nobody Asked Me But 'Joe Louis is a credit to his race...the human race." However, Cannon also wrote columns titled "What They Really Mean." With all due respect, the following might be what they mean in 2004.

After El Duque, Mussina and Vazquez, we don't have anybody who can get anybody out. It doesn't matter if it's Loaiza, Sturtze, or Halsey. We'd better score a lot of runs.

When Sturtze comes in, the other team is so tired from running the bases and scoring they usually are too tired to hit anymore.

Fred Wilpon downplayed the role his son, Mets' COO Jeff Wilpon, had in the firing of manager Art Howe.

Of course I listen to my son but I can't say publicly that he is in charge. Would he be the COO if he were someone else's son?

My preference would have been to wait until the season was over before making the decision to fire Art Howe public.

Now that everyone knows what we were going to do, we have to save face and appear that we really care about Art Howe. We wanted to keep this quiet until after the season because it hurts our chances of replacing Howe with someone who is managing another team.
WHAT WAS SAID
Joe Torre refused to talk about rescheduling the Toronto series to Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and using Thursday to make up the game with Tampa Bay. All Joe would say is "They tell me when to show up."
